How to Untrain Your Mind and Take Back Control: Authority, War, and the Power of NLP

Introduction: The Hidden Cost of Obedience

In 1966, a quiet experiment inside a hospital revealed something chilling about human nature. Psychiatrist Charles K. Hofling discovered that 95% of trained nurses would break rules and endanger lives—simply because an authority figure told them to. This wasn’t about incompetence. It was about conditioning.

Today, this tendency still governs much of our lives. We obey systems, follow instructions, and defer our power, but at what cost? Now more than ever, it’s time to untrain ourselves of the conditioning that has limited our perceptions.

Why Do We Obey Without Question?

From childhood, we’re taught to listen: to parents, teachers, supervisors, and officials. This conditioning isn’t inherently bad—it creates order. But when left unchecked, it disables critical thinking and turns us into obedient automatons.

Hofling’s Hospital Experiment proved this. When nurses were told to administer a lethal dose of a drug by a fake doctor over the phone, 21 out of 22 complied, despite knowing it violated policy and common sense. I’m more horrified that the nurses knew that they were giving the patients a lethal dose. They were to administer a non-existent drug (“Astroten”) at twice the maximum safe dosage.

The cause? Authority bias—our innate tendency to believe that those in power know best.

History Repeats: When Obedience Leads to War

We like to think we’re rational. But history shows that people are easily led, especially into conflict. Yet, here we are again at the threat of a war we never thought we needed. Is this another of humanity’s mistakes?

  • Vietnam was fueled by fear and misinformation.
  • The Iraq War was justified by claims that were later disproven.
  • Millions followed orders they didn’t question—because questioning wasn’t modeled, encouraged, or allowed.

The real danger isn’t bad leadership—it’s unquestioned leadership. When we don’t think critically, we outsource our moral compass to institutions that don’t always have our best interests in mind. I think the world is hopefully waking up that many of our leaders do NOT have our best interests in mind. For decades, I have been teaching Neuro Linguistic Programming and helping my clients to untrain their brains. Yet those willing to free themselves are paltry by percentage.

It’s Time to Untrain Your Mind

The keyword here is “untrain.” To untrain means to unlearn automatic obedience, unquestioned compliance, and conditioned passivity. It means rewiring your responses and reclaiming the authority you’ve given away.

And that starts with tools that help you reshape how you think.

NLP: The Key to Reclaiming Ownership of Your Life

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is one of the most effective frameworks for mental reconditioning. It allows you to reclaim the mental real estate you’ve unconsciously rented out to other people.

How NLP Helps You Untrain:

  • Identify and reframe limiting beliefs: You don’t need someone else to tell you what’s best for you.
  • Reprogram automatic responses: NLP helps you pause, reflect, and choose rather than obey out of habit.
  • Build internal authority: Stop looking outward for answers and start trusting your inner guidance.

NLP doesn’t just teach you how to think better—it teaches you how to think for yourself.

Leadership Starts With Inner Freedom

The world doesn’t just need fewer wars or better politicians. It needs more individuals who think critically and act independently. People who’ve untrained the part of themselves that just wants to be told what to do.

  • Don’t follow authority without question.
  • Don’t settle for “this is how it’s always been.”
  • Don’t wait for someone else to give you permission.

Untrain yourself. Rethink. Reclaim. Rewrite your narrative.

Final Words: Untrain to Reclaim

Hofling’s experiment was a warning. NLP is the response.

Whether you’ve been following rules too long, doubting your own authority, or feeling stuck in someone else’s story, it’s time to untrain. NLP can be your path to personal liberation, helping you stop living by default and start living by design.

The revolution doesn’t start in the streets. It starts in your mind.
